Blu Jemz & Roger Yamaha
Second Cousins [Mixtape]
Money Studies/TurnTableLab 2005

Been sitting on this one for too long now (precisely one year, if that's of any real relevance) so here's a nice rip for your stealing pleasure... No tracklist given, but let's say it's from a couple of TTLab affiliates who happened to have held some wild nights in Baltimore for some time and are rather dedicated crate-diggers. The mix itself could fairly fit the Hollertronix style, but don't expect your M.I.A., Luda, or any of that massive krunk of late - these boys dig out a little deeper. I honestly have no clue where they've been pulling most of these tracks from - probably secret shops inside of secret clubs holding ...eh... secret parties? Anyway... I love when something this new (and cheesy on top) makes so much sense to my ears. Call it my secret 'guilty' pleasure.

Triosk
The Headlight Serenade
Leaf 2006

01. Visons IV
02. Lost Broadcast
03. Lost Reprise
04. Intensives Leben
05. Lazyboat
06. Not to Hurt You
07. Headlights
08. One, Twenty-Four
09. Vostok
10. Moment Returns
11. Fear Survivor

We need to differentiate between at least two facets of electro-jazz: one very loungey, rhythmic and affected, smartly popularised in its time by groups like St. Germain; the other sensitive and rather discrete/minimalist... "elevator music" of Tortoise breed - a kind of ear training used for brain stimulation instead of for brainwashing. It's this latter one that Triosk were calling upon on this 3rd album, with evocative sounds, like one of the most eminent examples of their kind. And since most of their music is impromptu, they even add a bit of their own. The tracks gain lightness here - a spontaneity that could be lacking from electro-jazz hybridizations; they keep a false predictable minimalism which makes important each gesture, each key of piano or striking of drums, and highlights their sudden expansion, the found density of certain passages. An album of total maturity and control, freshness and inventiveness, which stands a notch above Biosphere's latest and basically everything that came out this year, but which is most likely not to reach out to fresh pairs of ears...

Subtle

Lex/EMI 2006

01. A Tale of Apes I
02. A Tale of Apes II
03. Middleclass Stomp
04. Middleclass Kill
05. Midas Gutz
06. Nomanisisland
07. The Mercury Craze
08. Bed to the Bills
09. Return of the Vein
10. Call to Dive
11. The Ends

"Panoramic Oaklandish avant-pop weirdos offering cryptically rapped odes to woe and libido."

Well, it's official: Dax Pierson has partially recovered from his car accident, and although he won't be seen touring anytime soon, he's taking his Subtle duties seriously. "There's always hope, man"... The band's just been co-signed to EMI, so things might turn lot better than anyone thought. They're still a freaky load, harsh and even kind of menacing. But that's to be expected. It's good, in fact. Cause then again, it can get quite gentle and beautiful. Cause there's so much more to it and lots to look for. The kind of music which, by mixing all the styles, ends up more resembling them, while making something of its own, completely indefinable. Oh, will the fun last? Will I be listening to this for the next 5 years, or even next month? I dunno. I only know it's essential listening for now.

DJ Woody & Sean Vinylment
A Country Practice [Mixtape]
A Country Practice 2006

Now don't think this is some scratch happy, nerdy 'rare grooves and breaks' mix. It's more like a distinguished elder gentleman who sips tea, smokes a pipe and does his crosswords. Nah, actually it's just a dope, mellow and incredibly well thought out mix, with Woody deflty arranging Sean's records on his turntables without boring you out or hurting your ears. It's the music that really is on showcase here, with some great tracks of varying moods being dug by Sean, including unknowns and more common classics, all arranged with subtle cuts, juggles and manipulations by Woody, showing once more why he's one of UK's nicest DJs.

Many thanks to Gipsy B. for slipping this into my shopping bag. Again, no real tracklist given, except for 34 randomish titles which you can find on the scanned back cover. Enjoy.

Speaking of modern poets, and whether they'll be studied in schools someday... A busker in Amsterdam, a lumberjack in Norway, a street vendor in Spain, a team leader in Singapore, a re-delivery boy, a candy maker, a street sweeper, a bartender, a maid, a construction worker, manager of a CD store, a bull rider and a booking agent... Buddy's also a growth junkie, an expert witness to the moon, avid player of marbles in the trees, inciter of the goose bump riot, elated son of a guitar repair woman, and a two-time World Poetry Slam Champion (2004/2005). He's the kind of guy that you hear once and look up on google-images, expecting a beard. He's a star. He could be Sage Francis' brother and your favourite momma's boy. His work has been used to win national collegiate forensics competitions and is published internationally.

'Personal Journals' meets 'Pigs on the Wing' meets Neil Young meets mindfucking universe.

Bless you, Buddy.

Phelan Sheppard

Leaf 2006

01. Hazel Wand
02. Broken in the Wrong Places
03. Weaving Song
04. Tjarno

06. The Plantagenet Whore
07. Oriental Star
08. Parachute Seeds
09. Anuncios Perfumados
10. Water Clock
11. Lady Never City

Just wanted to quickly let you in on this little joy, since it goes so purrfectly with the weather and, well, pretty much everything lately. Leaf's been doing mighty good so far this year, and although there's a nice new Hawk & Hacksaw begging to be heard, I'll just stick with this 2nd album by Keiron Phelan & David Sheppard (two thirds of State River Widening from a couple years ago) for a while. Most of their work has been touching, but now I feel they're on something special. The perfect autumn soundtrack? Love it to bits.

Kaleidoscopic neo-classical cinematic masterpiece.

Dr Who Dat?
Beat Journey
Lex 2006

01. Beat Rock
02. Braziliant Thought
03. Pharoahe's Dream [ft. Capital Peoples]
04. B-Boy Portrait in Spain
05. March to Viberia
06. Stop Calling Me
07. Thumpa

09. Deep Blaque

12. ASAP (Flash)
13. Follow
14. Daiya [ft. Capital Peoples]
15. Kelly Drive
16. Ageless Daisy
17. Bahia Blues
18. Warped

...and we get back to Lex, with a flex. Hip-hop folks often go for an alter-ego or two when dabbling in side-projects, so to find Philly-based Jneiro Jarel taking his from the "Doctor Who" show doesn't say much at first (lots of Dr's out there, aren't they?). It does make some sense though. Just as the show follows a time-travelling adventurer known as "The Doctor", Beat Journey finds "Who Dat?" time-travelling as well, by melding live instrumentation and samples from various time periods and various genres. It's been done before - not always with as much style. Lazy as it may sound, this is like the perfect cross between Madlib and Prefuse 73. Really blunted jazzy instrumentals akin to the Beat Konducta series, but somehow much prettier. Floaty...

Something like South Bronx making out with South America.

I approve of this record.

Dijf Sanders
To Be a Bob
DUB 2005

01. Cheerleader Memorial
02. Woefull Wombdream
03. Neglected Pressure
04. Swamp Boulevard
05. I Need Some Money
06. Rats in Automatz
07. For Your Ass Only

09. Jizz
10. Tickle Me Free
11. Mirror Strike
12. Still Raining
13. A Greek Adventure
14. Etheric Landmarch
15. Tombstone Blues

Dijf Sanders is a one-man-band from Antwerp... hold on... Dijf Sanders is one-third of Ghent-based band The Violent Husbands, which since long have stirred some media attention for their take on, err, "intelligent country music". Dijf's solo project goes less smoothly, both this and his previous album staying almost unnoticed, in spite of having much to do with the glitchy/jazzy trends of late. Actually, it's somewhat hard to pin him down: he goes from Four Tet acoustics on the 1st track to Tom Waits-style broken love ballads on For Your Ass Only (google it to find the title of a tad 'pikantische' film). Or Jizz, in which vinyl noise and a drunken piano sails you to New York-ish jaaaazzzclubs of the 20's, with them whiskeys, fat cigars and sweaty men with beards around... Nnnnice. Former Beck trumpetist Jon Birdsong joins in for a while and there's also some double bass, but the rest is all Dijf. And it's good fun.

Kooky clunky electronic jazz fusion gold.

10. Calypso in a Box
11. Bicycle Bells
12. Happiness Nuggets
13. I'll Read You a Story

Originally recorded for Radio France Culture's "Atelier de Cr?©ation Radiophonique", this is composed entirely using music boxes ("bo?®tes ? musique") - from miniatures hidden in 1940s birthday cards to large Victorian ones. Colleen alters them, re-samples and affects their pitch/delay, sometimes jacking so well that they resemble other instruments (harps, xylophones), but her approach remains esentially the same: piling layers of chimes into something mind-pleasing and ear-tickling. It's a clever trick, and although I don't listen to much music that's so flagrantly cute, I can accept it coming from an orchestra of music boxes, which connotes cuteness anyway. Besides, if music is cute, the cuteness is rarely the only aspect of it I like, and on this EP, Colleen gives lots to focus on.

Incredibly generous.

An album from Sweden on a little Danish label. Its title would translate as "Breaking the Silence" but gosh, I'm kind of lost for words here - this proves so difficult to review. The music, the sound quality, the difference in structure, the power of the tracks... There's some pretty neat drum patterns to start with, but what grab me are the abstract songs, with snatches of strings and pianos, reed organs and what have you. Makes it really bold and full. And charming, and so human indeed; takes me back to when I've first heard Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK. A very warming disc which I imagine being cooked up mainly at night, on a very cold and darkish Swedish winter.

Flying Lotus

Plug Research 2006

01. 1983

04. Orbit Brazil
05. Shifty
06. Babble
07. Pet Monster Shotglass
08. Hello
09. Untitled #7
10. Unexpected Delight [ft. Laura Darlington]
11. 1983 [Daedelus's Odd-Dance Party Remix]

Still absorbing this new Plug Research release, but from first listen, this guy's really bringing mind-boggling stuff, beat-wise and any way you want it. The label calls him "a visionary" practicing some "next level shit"; at the same time insisting on his Coltrane roots (he is indeed Alice Coltrane's now famous nephew) to finally end up declaring him "Blade Runner, Bambaataa, The Bomb Squad and Basquiat" all in one (oh, "future Prince" as well). To simply sell it all as "robo-funk" would be too easy I reckon, just 'cause there's lots of subtlety, and most of all so much restraint, that you could actually start thinking of your Lipp/Dabrye/Who Dat? as fucking disco jams. The funk's still there, but never gets milked for immediacy - perfectly locked, yet perfectly listenable for all its short 34-min life. Perhaps that's what's so mind-bogging about 1983 after all:

The groove is king and the groove is fucked up.

Encre
Plexus II
Miasmah 2006

01. Plexus II [40:58]

Comprised of one forty-minute composition, Yann Tambour uses his cello, voice and the natural sounds around him to slowly piece together a life-affirming symphony in the vein of Steve Reich, Colleen or even Deaf Center themselves. Beginning with the hushed, echoing sound of slowly scraped strings, we are subtly introduced to longer chords and the simplest of lightly plucked acoustics. This is a piece of music which you just have to let build around you, close your eyes and it gently arranges itself bit by bit, with elements appearing and disappearing gracefully and purposefully. The track reaches a triumphant moment of togetherness midway through, where every element is blended together before falling head over heels into the second half - a darker journey accompanied by the sound of rain pattering on a window.

Hazmat Modine
Bahamut
Barb?¨s 2006

01. Yesterday Morning
02. It Calls Me
03. Bahamut
04. Fred of Bellaroy
05. Broke My Baby's Heart
06. Almost Gone

10. Dry Spell
11. Ugly Rug
12. Who Walks in When I Walk Out?
13. Grade-A Gray Day
14. Man Trouble
15. Untitled

Hazmat Modine plays the kind of blues one might have found in a whorehouse in New Orleans had the city been built on the Black Sea somewhere alongside Macao and inhabited by Gypsies. The band is driven by a pair of harmonicas, backed by tuba, drums, guitars, and trumpet, with the addition of special guests playing exotic instruments such as the claviola, the cimbalom (Romanian hammered dulcimer) or the Chinese mouth-organ, the bass sax and the Sarusaphone. Wade Schuman has the appropriately throaty voice of someone who has both hopped freight trains and collaborated with the throat singers of Tuva (really...).

Yep, those dirty yanks again, jacking someone else's heritage... I went to see them live one night at the "Knitting Factory" - just before leaving their home-town New York. Could've chosen Lidell or even Ellen Alien instead, but sometimes I'm drawn to new discoveries, and Hazmat happened to look quite promising. They put a nice show that time and I fell in love with the music, the people, and the whole damn city, eventually. Just lots of talent and lots of charisma. Bahamut was recorded all over the map - from Milan, to Bali and Sri Lanka - but somehow will always stick to me as a staple of NYC. I listen to it a lot, 'specially when I wanna revel in my own privacy. Of course it'd go down just as well in whore saloons and smoky bars though.

Now these guys have long been leaders of the pack in Australia, with their twisted, loopy, sampladelic, multicultural perversions. The first aussie hip-hop group to get a US deal, they're more of an eclectic background of characters (Maltese, Macedonian, Indian, Pakistani, Maori), wearing silly costumes at shows and frantically sampling anything that comes in hand. I'm not that much into rap records these days (although some of my favourite tracks are rapped), and paranoid-socio-political-revolutionary nonsense usually bugs me out the most.. Thankfully though, CoD is not your Non Phixion. They still have that punk attitude, they still have outstanding production - but they amuse, entertain, and are clever enough not to take themselves too seriously. In the end, it's making something that works on different levels, cause like Koala said, "you can never escape your influences, you can never escape your genetics, the music that your parents listen to when you're growing up".
