Record Report: DJ Paul - A Person Of Interest
Being a vet in the game like DJ Paul is no easy task, and one of the major reasons the Three 6 Mafia member managed to stick around and remain relevant for so long is because he knows what works for him. While others try to keep up with the times and follow trends in music, DJ Paul stays true to his original sound that his fans know and love. You know how that saying goes - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Most rappers can't get away with releasing a 26-track album, but then, DJ Paul isn't most rappers. A Person Of Interest is the third studio album from the Memphis MC, and it is entirely self-produced. Now that's impressive.
Paul lets listeners know what it is from the jump with "I'm Dat Raw", the sinister sounding gritty track track following the intro.
"No Panties" serves as the ratchet strip club anthem that any good rap/trap album would be incomplete with. Compare it to his Three 6 Mafia brother Juicy J's "Bandz A Make Her Dance". Although the more upbeat tempo of the instrumental on "No Panties" makes the two tracks sound completely different, the subject matter is similar. The two tracks separately is something like a best of both worlds thing.
Paul brings the real trap sound on "Trap Back Jumpin" and the Gucci Mane-assisted "W.I.L.L.". What many young rap fans these days don't realize is that the southern trap style that's become so popularized lately owes much of its success to DJ Paul and Three 6 Mafia. A real originator of that down south sound, rapping tough, gangsta lyrics over hard-hitting, bass-heavy beats, DJ Paul deserves more respect than what he's getting - young cats need to start paying homage!
The final track before the outro, "Unstoppable", is there to let everyone know that DJ Paul isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and to tell other rappers to "go in the closet...and hang their mothaf***in' career up".
The tracks noted are just a few highlights of A Person Of Interest. The album is a solid body of work, oh and how could I forget? It also comes with a DVD featuring a look at the making of the album, a comedy/horror movie, and never before seen cooking videos - you did know DJ Paul doubles as a chef right? Have you tasted his award-wining BBQ sauce?!
All in all, DJ Paul's loyal fans will be more than pleased with A Person Of Interest, and new listeners will be hooked.
