In 2009 Nelly made a public announcement in Las Vegas that he was actually recording a new album in Las Vegas. In an interview later in 2009 he told DJ Semtex that he plans to release a self-titled album in the first quarter of 2010. The fatal shooting in April 2010 of Nelly's cousin Michael Johnson in Missouri has presumably added further to the album's delay. The current release date is September 21, 2010.Nelly (exec.), The Neptunes, Polow da Don, Jermaine Dupri, Akon, J. R. Rotem, Jim Jonsin, Play-N-Skillz, Rico Love, Dr. Luke

Nelly announced that the album would be titled, Nelly 5.0. The title was inspired by the his 2011 Ford Mustang, which also will be on the album artwork. Nelly's tricked-out Mustang GT came to life after the artist caught a glimpse of the vehicle while inside the walls of Ford's design studio a little more than a year ago as part of a partnership tied to the launch of the 2009 Ford Flex. Since then, Nelly has collaborated with Ford's design team and DUB's customization team to make the Mustang his own while still keeping the vehicle true to its muscle car roots, "It’s a lot of things. It’s my fifth drop date. It’s just the energy of it all, "5.0" was always one of my dream cars."
"Tippin' in the Club" is set to be the first official single released from the album
